About Orthodontics
Here at Newcastle City Dental, we provide orthodontic care for all ages. If your child is a patient at our practice, we will keep a close eye on the development of their teeth and jaws and if necessary will recommend early orthodontic treatment
Early Treatment
As children’s teeth and jaws develop, it is possible to predict if they will have any orthodontic problems in the future. Oral habits including thumb and finger sucking and mouth breathing can change the shape of a child’s jaws. Using advanced orthodontic appliances, it’s possible to guide the growth of a young child’s jaws and facial bones, creating sufficient room for their adult teeth and minimising the risk of tooth removals during their teens. This approach can help to create a more attractive facial profile.
Will My Child Need Early Treatment?
If we feel your child might benefit from early orthodontic treatment, we will recommend an orthodontic evaluation around age 6 or seven. By this stage it is possible for an orthodontist to predict the development of their adult teeth and if necessary to plan suitable orthodontic care. Early treatment may form part of a two-stage treatment plan, being completed with conventional braces during their teens. Not every child will need early treatment but if required it will be precisely planned to coincide with growth spurts, maximising the efficacy of orthodontic appliances.
